We are united, We Are Charlie
On Wednesday, January 7, 2015, journalists and employees of Charlie Hebdo and police officers were shot. Whether they were called Charb or Ahmed, Wolinski or Moustapha, they were horribly murdered.

Some of them were killed because they drew caricatures, others because they were simply working, and others because they were fulfilling their duties to protect the public.

The condemnation of this act must be absolute. It must be absolute because regardless of one’s beliefs, violence must never be used to impose one’s views on another in a democratic society.

One who challenges with a pen must be answered with a pen. Not with bullets.

Democracies bring together pluralistic thoughts and beliefs. As a result, there can be intense verbal confrontations, but they are verbal, always sticking to words alone.

Vote, protest, hold public meetings, write songs and articles, start a lawsuit…there are so many ways to express one’s opinion. Without physical violence. Without death.

Whatever our origins or beliefs, supposed or real, wherever we live, in the city center, a suburb, or a village in the countryside, we have all enjoyed the cartoons published by this newspaper or been offended by it. Regardless of how we feel about the newspaper, we are saddened by the barbaric and fanatical attack that destroyed the work of Charlie Hebdo and plunged into deep sorrow not only for the victims, their families, and their friends, but also for our country.

What will happen tomorrow? We have been abruptly confronted with the question of protecting our liberties.

Even though journalists were shot while defending the freedom of expression, we should not relent to the wave of terror that will try to restrict our individual freedoms.

While anti-racist activist journalists were killed, these were individuals who were targeted, not their real or supposed relationship to Islam.

To ensure we can exercise the fundamental freedoms necessary for the development of democracy, we must all be vigilant and ensure that living together is more than just a slogan…that the national unity we feel in this moment of grief is manifested in ongoing actions.

Freedom and democracy are not just words. We must collectively roll up our sleeves and take action. We must work as individuals committed to good sense and good will coming together to reinforce what we have done in silence for years, perhaps because we lacked the means or motivation. Because we fear for tomorrow, we must act now to build a more positive future.

We must work to provide educational and vocational guidance for greater socio-professional organization, to develop secular educational programs to improve the relations between the police and civil society. All of these issues may seem insignificant compared to the violence that arose yesterday.

However, we cannot strengthen our democracy by attending a protest or saying, “we are all Charlie.” We must be individually and collectively invested in making it work. let us be indignant and organized
